If you’re looking for a relaxing winter weekend getaway from Singapore, look no further: Langkawi is your answer. Located between Malaysia and Thailand and surrounded by the Andaman Sea, Langkawi is the perfect seaside escape. Known as the “Jewel of Kedah” and made up of 99 islands, Langkawi is a short 1.5 hour direct flight from Singapore and a peaceful respite from the bustling city life.
I found myself here by some twist of fate. I’m not even joking when I say this — I opened my Marriott Bonvoy app, saw the Welcome page image of an infinity pool on an island, accidentally hit a discover button that led me to this resort in Langkawi… and booked a flight.
As a consultant, I’ve been lucky enough to accumulate hotel points and status through my weekly travels. 2 nights shy of reaching Titanium status with Marriott (which means I spent a total of 75+ nights in a hotel this year — ah!!), I used my points to book 3 nights at The St. Regis Langkawi. Not only would this help me reach the next status level, but also I got to stay at a 5-star beachside resort for free. Say what? Someone pinch me please.
The St. Regis Langkawi is the definition of luxury. We lucked out and got upgraded to a St. Regis Pool Suite through my Suite Night Awards, which was a total dream. We had our own butler, private pool and cabana, and direct access to the beach! I’m about as low key as you can get, so this lifestyle was completely out of my element and definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity.
We were greeted by a ceremonial gong that announced our arrival — it was very nice but honestly a little extra, I tried so hard not to laugh! A butler met us with drinks and treats as we awaited check in. At 6:30 every night, there is a sabering ceremony where the staff opens a bottle of champagne with a saber. Apparently this is a ritual that happens across all St. Regis’s worldwide. How cool is that? Traditions and free champagne? Yes please!
Upon arriving in our suite, we were met with a cozy living room, complete with a bar cart, snacks, and straw hats and bags for the beach. Our butler brought us new treats every evening, which was so sweet. There was also a complimentary rose petal bath!
The St. Regis is connected by a pier to the Westin, which as a guest, you have access to amenities at both. This includes restaurants! Speaking of food, as a Platinum/Titanium member, you can choose your award of either 1000 points or daily breakfast at their buffet. CHOOSE THE BREAKFAST. The spread was amazing and so worth it. Do yourself a favor and order their lobster omelet and detox juices. You won’t regret it. There’s also unlimited champagne and Bloody Mary’s for those who prefer other types of drinks. 😉
While both resorts have an infinity pool, I personally preferred the one at the Westin as it directly overlooked the sea. While the St. Regis infinity pool is more ornate, the view of the sea is blocked by palm trees and the beach front.
The one downside to staying at the St. Regis is that it’s located on the southeast tip of the island — while it’s secluded and quiet, it’s far from most of the island’s attractions. Since it was basically 100° every day, we mostly stayed inside our suite and relaxed in our private pool. When we did go outside, it was in the evening when the temperature cooled down. One of my favorite things to do was walk along the pier to the Westin and take in the sunset. The views at golden hour are absolutely beautiful.
For those who are adventurous and brave enough to face the heat (this New Yorker could not handle 100° + humidity in December), there is a concierge who can plan excursions for you. I highly encourage you to go out and explore the natural beauty of the island if you have time!
Overall, our stay at the St. Regis Langkawi was incredibly relaxing. I definitely recommend staying here if you’re looking for a quiet weekend escape.
What countries in Southeast Asia should I visit next? Chiang Mai and Bali are high up on the list!
